Hello Saint Columban families,
Happy September. For those who may not know me, I am your Pastoral Assistant for Youth Ministry here at St. Columban. I am writing to you about our new schedule for Youth Ministry this 2017-2018 school year. This affects all youth grades 6-12. Sunday Youth Catechism meetings will begin with the 10:30 Mass and end at 1 PM. These begin next week. Youth Nights will only be an hour from 6:30-7:30 PM on select Wednesdays. Both are required components of our Youth Ministry program.
Our teens will benefit from having faith formation on Sundays directly following Mass, since celebration of the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian Life. It is from there that we are fed with Holy Scripture in the Liturgy of the Word and fed with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist during Holy Communion. Thereafter, the natural response to the concluding command, “go forth and glorify the Lord by your life”, is to dive deeper in our faith and spread the Good News. The teens will be able to do this with Youth Catechism in the Education Center. We are blessed to have awesome, dedicated catechists who offer their talents to teach on Sundays.
We will still have teen fellowship on select Wednesdays for Youth Nights. These sessions will be used for celebrations (e.g. Halloween Party, Christmas Party), opportunities to encounter the sacraments (scheduled confession times during Advent and Lent and Ash Wednesday Mass), and additional time to supplement Sunday lessons (Safe Environment class and possible YDisciple sessions). This Wednesday the 13th will be the first, an ice cream social.
Post-confirmation teens, this message is especially for you: Since you have now been strengthened by the Sacrament of Confirmation, now is the time to share your God-given talents and harness the Christian leader within you. If you choose to show up on Sundays you will be small group leaders for this year’s confirmation candidates and act as mentors to coach them. On certain Wednesdays if there is interest, we can form discipleship groups to train you as leaders and to further develop your confidence in sharing the faith. I urge you, even if you have jobs and are working, to block off time on Wednesday nights to continue to have fellowship with your friends here at the church, and it goes without saying that your Sunday Mass Obligation does not end with your confirmation!
On that note, we cannot improve the Youth Ministry program without your help and input. I invite parents to get to know what we will be doing this year with a parent meeting scheduled for October 18 at 6:30 PM. Parents of Confirmation candidates (all in high school to be confirmed in 2019) will receive information about Confirmation at this meeting and are required to attend.
As St. Columban once said: Christi simus, non nostri,
